Donald Trump's worst weeks of 2018 – the definitive list

The administration’s base-level awfulness has made this a competitive category but some weeks stood out as truly dire

It would be safe to say Donald Trump hasn’t had the best year. From his longtime adviser flipping on him, to inside revelations about the level of his ineptitude, to being named in court filings as having allegedly directed illegal campaign payments, the president has faced a barrage of scandals.

Trump also lost the House of Representatives, held a number of bizarre press conferences and demonstrated his lack of familiarity with umbrellas. The president did, however, score one recent success, when his neologism “smocking” proved popular.

After two years of a compliant Congress, Trump can expect scrutiny into alleged collusion, obstruction and corruption

When Democrats formally assume the US House majority in January for the first time in eight years, they will contend with a president long dubbed by most members of their party as unfit and unqualified to serve.

In Trump's America, it's important to remember: this isn't normal | Michael H Fuchs

The breakdown of norms at home undermines democracy, in foreign affairs it undermines security. Americans must hold the president to account

This is not normal.

In the age of President Donald Trump, it is necessary to repeat this mantra constantly. The ways in which Trump breaks norms and shocks the conscience overwhelm America’s capacity to process each event with the appropriate level of outrage and accountability. America’s attention too often moves from one story to the next like sports highlights. Slowly, surely, America’s norms are stripped away.

The US government deliberately made the desert deadly for migrants | Natascha Elena Uhlmann

The deaths of two Guatemalan child migrants in US custody highlights the perilousness of a journey that is no accident

This month, Jakelin Caal Maquin, a seven-year-old Guatemalan girl, died less than 48 hours after being detained at a remote New Mexico border crossing. Felipe Gómez Alonzo, an eight-year old Guatemalan boy, spent his final days in custody before tragically passing on Christmas Eve. Both were brought to the United States by families seeking a better life for their children. In the United States, all they found was death.

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials have been quick to deflect the blame. “[Jakelin’s] family chose to cross illegally,” Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen asserted. In the case of Felipe, the DHS pointed to migrant shelters in Mexico as possible sources of disease. These desperate attempts do little to obscure the full weight of US culpability.

Employers must prepare for an aging workforce – or face unexpected costs | Gene Marks

Strategies for transitioning older workers towards retirement such as flexible hours and positions are critical for small businesses

The American workforce is getting older. In fact, by 2024 the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that 25% of the US workforce will be composed of workers over the age of 55, and a third of those workers will be older than 65. The reasons, for the most part, are due to the country’s overall ageing population as a result of declining birth rates and better life expectancy. But there’s also something else going on. Employees are not only working longer because they can. They’re working longer because they have to. Retirement savings are just not keeping up.

Things to watch out for in 2019? Doom and plenty of gloom Larry Elliott

Years ending in ‘9’ always seem to bring upheaval … and it looks like we are in for a hot one in 2019

Call it coincidence if you like but years that end in a “9” have a habit of being eventful. More particularly, they tend to be years of upheaval. There’s 1789, of course, the year of the French Revolution. The Peterloo massacre, which eventually led to the launch of the Guardian, took place in 1819 and a century later there were fears that Bolshevism would spread from Russia westwards.

The year 1939 requires no further explanation while 1979 encompassed the Iranian Revolution and the arrival of Margaret Thatcher in Downing Street. A decade after that, the tearing down of the Berlin Wall heralded the collapse of communism. In 2009, central banks had to pull out all the stops to prevent the deepest recession since the second world war turning into a second Great Depression. The slump against which all others are measured began with the Wall Street crash of October 1929.

Mother asks me to buy my little brother a Switch for Christmas. She tells him it was from Santa Claus. Now she's asking for a "real" present from me.

I bought my little brother a Switch for Christmas. I live in a different state from my mom and brother, so I had it delivered to their address during Black Friday. I tell her to make it a gift from me and her to him for Christmas.

Christmas rolls by and on the morning of she calls me asking me how much money I had in my bank, and if I was willing to send her 60 dollars so my brother can go to the aquarium. I remind her I spent 300 dollars on a brand new Nintendo Switch and that on top of that she already owed me money I had lent her. She tells me that the Switch was a gift from Santa Claus out loud so my brother would hear, and that the aquarium would be a "separate transaction" and that I should think about my brother more. I told her no and hung up.

My little brother thinks I didn't send him anything for Christmas and it's all because my mom has a 10 year old still believing in Santa Claus.

This happened over five days ago and I am still fuming and upset. We have not spoken since. This is a great way to end the year and start the new year.

Edit: Well this certainly blew the hell up. I will be calling up my mother and brother on new years eve just for causal greetings and see if we can resolve this, I'm also visiting at the end of January since I was unable to make it for Christmas. That should be fun.

(Ohio) Woman sent me video of her setting my priceless painting (family heirloom) on fire because I called CPS on her

My boyfriend’s sister in law abuses and over medicated her autistic child so I called Child Protective services on her months ago. I was living up there near his family and long story short, when I drove home for the holidays (was just supposed to be a short trip but all hell broke loose and my boyfriend quickly packed everything we owned and followed me down a few days later) He forgot this one painting that has been in the family for over 100 years and my grandfather gave it to me before he died 14 years ago. She and her husband sent me a video saying “this is for calling CPS, bitch.” They’re both clearly seen in the video and called it a priceless painting.

Do I have any ground to sue or press charges? I wanted to see if anyone here might have advice before I go and shell out my savings for a lawyer. This was literally my most prized possession and my heart is in so many pieces because my grandfather gave it to me so long ago. I would give everything I own just to get it back. I’m living in Florida and this is all in Ohio.

This week has shown, once again, that Italian football has a deep-seated problem with racism and fascism. At the Boxing Day game at the San Siro stadium in Milan, the black Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly was booed for the entire match. Then, the next day, it was revealed that the fan who had died in a fight before the game between rival “ultras” (the hardcore fans) was a neo-Nazi member of a gang called Blood and Honour.

No country is free of racism, as the banana skin thrown at the recent north London derby and the abuse of Raheem Sterling, made clear. But in Italy, the problem isn’t a result of individual idiocy, but of widespread group planning. The incidents aren’t isolated, but incessant. Anne Frank stickers are used by Lazio ultras to invoke death to their Roma rivals. “Jew” is a common taunt on stadium banners, and fascist and Nazi symbols – swastikas, celtic crosses, the Wehrmacht eagle and straight-arm salutes – appear every Sunday. Players even celebrate goals by giving the Roman salute back to their fans (Paolo Di Canio’s repeated use of the gesture was simply the most famous example of it).

Tim Dowling: I’m taking stock of my life with cold, hard statistics

How many times has a fox triggering a security light caused me to ponder the meaningless of existence?

Sometimes when I speak in public – in a classroom setting, or at a literary event, or at the Ealing Civic Society’s annual building design awards presentation, someone will come up to me and say, “Is this going to be the subject of your next column?” I always say, “Possibly, if something goes really badly wrong!” But what I’m really thinking is: my version of events versus the recollection of 80 to 100 independent witnesses? Not likely. An argument with a squirrel – that I can write about.

Memory and perception can be famously poor mediators of reality. In this dark era of disinformation and fake news, I find it helpful to take stock of my life on an annual basis, reckoning with nothing but cold, hard numbers. These, then, are my personal statistics for the year 2018, using the very latest obtainable figures.

Jon Jones stops Alexander Gustafsson in three to win UFC light heavyweight title

No matter the controversy, and there was a mountain of it during this chaotic week – throughout Jon Jones’ career, really – one constant remains: his unbridled talent.

Despite the 17-month layoff, Jones proved he’s still at the apex of the sport with an all-around game that was far too much for Alexander Gustafsson in their rematch Saturday at the Forum just outside Los Angeles. With the win, Jones regained the light heavyweight title he never lost in competition.

  • Tide’s Tua Tagovailoa shines in 45-34 victory over Sooners
  • QB Trevor Lawrence leads Tigers to 30-3 win in Cotton Bowl

Tua Tagovailoa threw for 318 yards and four touchdowns and No 1-ranked Alabama beat No 4 Oklahoma 45-34 on Saturday night in the College Football Playoff semifinal at the Orange Bowl.

The high-scoring Sooners reached the semifinal despite a porous defense that was no match for Alabama’s diverse attack, and the Crimson Tide led 28-0 after only 17 minutes.

  • Shiffrin breaks World Cup record with 36th slalom victory
  • American had previously shared record with Marlies Raich

Mikaela Shiffrin capped the best year of her career by setting yet another milestone Saturday, overtaking one of her childhood idols to become the most successful female slalom skier in the 52-year history of the World Cup.

In the final race of 2018, the American added her 36th victory. Shiffrin previously shared the record with Austria’s Marlies Raich, who, competing as Marlies Schild, won 35 times before retiring in 2014.

Trump-Russia: Republican probe of alleged FBI bias ends 'with a whimper'

Committee chairs issue just a letter rather than final report after inquiry that was condemned as ploy to undermine Robert Mueller

Republicans have quietly and unceremoniously ended their congressional investigation of whether the FBI and Justice Department were biased in their handling of inquiries into Hillary Clinton’s emails and Donald Trump’s ties to Russia.

House judiciary chairman Robert Goodlatte and oversight chairman Trey Gowdy, who are retiring next week, sent a letter rather than a full report to the Justice Department and the Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell. It wraps up an inquiry that was conducted mostly behind closed doors but also in public as Republican lawmakers often criticised interview subjects later and suggested they were conspiring against Trump.

Democrats won't seat North Carolina Republican amid election fraud claims

The state’s elections board has refused to certify the race for the House seat while it investigates absentee ballot irregularities

Democrats said on Friday they will not swear a North Carolina Republican into his US House seat until state officials resolve questions surrounding his election.

The North Carolina elections board has refused to certify the race between Republican Mark Harris and Democrat Dan McCready, while it investigates irregularities concerning absentee ballots. Harris holds a slim lead in unofficial results, but officials are looking into criminal allegations against an operative hired by his campaign.

Bread-and-butter local issues threaten to derail the global economy | Michael Boskin

Leaders must focus on domestic matters in 2019 to solve world problems such as trade and climate change

For many of the world’s economies, financial markets, heads of government, and carbon policies, 2018 did not end well. The scars of the global financial crisis, combined with longer-term structural economic, technological, cultural, and demographic trends, have left large swaths of the population in many countries feeling politically neglected, culturally disparaged, and/or economically wounded. And their expression of their grievances – at the polls, on the internet, and in the streets – has left their leaders profoundly weakened.

In Germany, the four-term chancellor Angela Merkel has long acted as the European Union’s de facto leader. Then came her fateful 2015 decision to welcome more than 1 million refugees into Germany. The backlash – fuelled by frustration with the added pressure on public services, finances and law enforcement, not to mention political fearmongering – left Merkel so wounded that she did not seek re-election as leader of her party this month and will not stand for re-election as chancellor after her current term expires in 2021.

Seriously, if Kanye’s name and all the memes weren’t attached to the shoe, same Kanye nuthuggers would laugh at anyone that wore them. If you wear yeezys that tell me you have zero taste and don’t think twice about what you wear and only follow the trend like the mindless drone that you are.
