Workers barely benefited from Trump’s sweeping tax cut, investigation shows
Big companies drove the 2017 Tax and Jobs Act, but did not commit to any specific wage hikes, the Center for Public Integrity found
Big companies drove Donald Trump’s tax cut law but refused to commit to any specific wage hikes for workers, despite repeated White House promises it would help employees, an investigation shows.
The 2017 Tax and Jobs Act – the Trump administration’s one major piece of enacted legislation – did deliver the biggest corporate tax cut in US history, but ultimately workers benefited almost not at all.

'Battle for America's soul': Biden comes out swinging at first 2020 event
The former vice-president has become a frontrunner in the primary race, raising $6.3m in the first 24 hours of his campaign
In the inaugural speech of his third campaign for the White House, the former vice-president Joe Biden returned to his native state of Pennsylvania and implored voters to reject Donald Trump’s presidency in what he framed as a “battle for America’s soul”.
“If I’m going to beat Donald Trump in 2020, it’s going to happen here. With your help, I think we’re going to be able to do that,” Biden said on Monday in Pittsburgh.

Justine Damond shooting: police officer 'acted as he was trained', court told
In closing arguments defence lawyer says Mohamed Noor was caught up in a ‘perfect storm’
A Minneapolis police officer who shot and killed an unarmed woman who approached his squad car minutes after calling 911 was caught up in “a perfect storm” of events but “acted as he was trained”, his attorney argued on Monday.
Prosecutors countered that Mohamed Noor was responsible for “a tragic event of his own making” in 2017 when he shot Justine Ruszczyk Damond, a dual US-Australian citizen who had summoned police when she heard a possible rape in the alley behind her home.

Let's talk about a "beater"
So I am the son of a mechanic of 35 years. He's been able to keep up with the current technologies and has worked on some of the most basic and advanced vehicles in the modern era.
It pains me to see people say, "buy a cheap reliable car" as if that is something easy to do. Unless you know a good mechanic that has access to dealer trades and auctions it can be tough. Here in SW PA, cars over 150k miles are usually junk. Rust due to salt, transmissions blown due to hills, etc. Unless you live in the suburbs, cars are not garage kept. My dad and I set out to find my grand mother a replacement car. I gave her a 2005 grand prix in 2014 with no rust and in 4 years of being outside, the rockers cannot be patched anymore.
We looked at around 35 cars and unfortunately my dad is retired. So he does not have access to dealer trades or auctions and most of his contacts have moved on or retired as well. This is a compilation of what we saw.
35 vehicles total
20 costing between 4-8k
- 11 had rust beyond belief
- 6 had check engine lights for multiple things (dad had a scan tool)
- 3 had a fair bit cosmetic or mechanical issues (suspension or a ton of wear items)
15 costing 8-12k
- 6 had too much rust
- 3 had check engine lights for multiple things
- 3 had a fair bit cosmetic or mechanical issues
- 2 were priced way over market value
- 1 we found for just over 12k that we bought (was listed at 14k)
We looked at a wide range of cars. Sure about half were GM, but the rest were Subaru's, Toyota's and Honda's. So this idea that people can "easily" find a "cheap but reliable" beater is a but insane. Many of these cars would cost even us thousands to maintain for a year. They could easily strand my grandmother as she travels to my uncles house every month (2 hour drive). Her old 2006 grand prix started to have issues, water pump, suspension work and the rockers were shot, patched 3 times.
Now I am not advocating for buying a new car. But we ended up reaching out to my other uncles and they all put together money for a 3 year old chevy trax for her. It has far more safety features than her old car, does much better in every crash test, should be reliable for 3-5 more years, etc. We could have gotten her a sonic/cruze but she didn't feel comfortable in them (too low and small) and she's in her 80's so comfort is a thing.
But the moral to the story is, when offering "advice" you need to understand that a "cheap but reliable" car is not an easy find and if you live up north very difficult to do in many cases. Don't assume that everyone has connections and has a reliable mechanic that can easily find good and cheap deals. My dad found me that 05 grand prix that I drive for 5 years and it was about 8k when I bought it in 2009, but that was back when he had unlimited access to thousands of cars.
***EDIT***I want to clarify something. Reasonably safe & reliable vehicles do exist under 5k. Even in my area. Out of 1 gem there are 10-20 POS Junkers. My point is, the average person cannot change their own oil. They wait 6 months after the oil light comes on to change it, drives tires to the cords and didn't know you need to replace brake pads. Those same people also don't have a reliable mechanic, know someone at a dealership or someone who goes to auctions. They do not have the know-how to find a cheap but reliable car. And if you take a look at the marketplace or Craigslist, people who are selling most of these cars say, "Only needs $20 part to pass inspection". And if you're on a 5k budget, can you afford to take 10-15 cars to a mechanic charging $100-150/car?
Let's also take a look at safety. Back in the day, without automation, head-on collisions were far more common this is why there was not need to put the front brace all the way across the front of the car. Due to better safety features, small-overlap is more common. You're 2004 civic has no front brace at a 15* offset but that 2017 Cadillac the other person is driving does. So surviving a small overlap crash in an older vehicle is actually very low.
I am not saying buy a new or expensive car. My point is, once you're financially sound, you should look to save and buy a more reliable and safe vehicle. Spending 10-14k on a CPO vehicle, unless you're in a financial mess is not a bad idea. Those Sub 5k beats can cost more than double in maintenance in just 2-3 years. Take that 5k, put it down in a 2-3 year old CPO vehicle and pay off the other 5-9k over a 2-3 year period and drive that car for another 5 years. If you HAVE to get a beater, PLEASE get someone who can help because I've seen hundreds of people get swindled.
**EDIT 2** I own a 2017 golf which will be paid off this year and wife drives a 2015 Sonic which will be paid off in a few days. We plan on driving these cars for awhile. We are considering upgrading her in a few years to a 2-3 year old car but with cash.

Authorities thwart US veteran's plan to bomb California white supremacist rally
Mark Domingo allegedly said he wanted revenge for attacks on mosques in New Zealand that killed 50 people last month
A terror plot by an army veteran who converted to Islam and planned to bomb a white supremacist rally in southern California as retribution for the New Zealand mosque attacks was thwarted, federal prosecutors said Monday.
Mark Domingo, 26, an infantryman who served a combat stint in Afghanistan, was arrested by federal agents Friday while finalizing plans to plant a bomb at a Nazi rally that had been scheduled Sunday in Long Beach.

Lies, damned lies and Donald Trump: the pick of the president's untruths
The White House incumbent has told a staggering 10,000 lies since taking office, some big, some trifling. Here’s a selection
Donald Trump likes to boast about his achievements, imagined and otherwise, that is no secret. The president regularly trumpets the success of the greatest economy ever, and the strongest military, and the most decisive electoral victory and all manner of other superlatives he’s supposed to have delivered. But one that is undeniable is that he has just become one of the most prolific liars in the history of American governance, passing the 10,000th lie of his administration this week – meaning an average of almost 17 lies a day over 604 days.

Whoa there Democrats – Joe Biden isn't as electable as you think | Richard Wolffe
The idea that the presidential candidate has a lock on white rust-belt voters is wrong in so many ways
Joe Biden has many strengths as a presidential candidate: experience, policy smarts, respect for the rule of law, an ability to do something more than watch cable news. Even a Sleepy Joe is a significant upgrade on a Dumbass Donald.
But what Biden doesn’t possess, no matter how many times lazy reporters and pundits say it, is a steel-like grip on the rust belt states that could decide the general election. No matter what you think of his politics or personality, the electability debate is – as the candidate might say himself – a bunch of malarkey.

The Guardian view on Spain’s election: a chance to rebalance | Editorial
The most striking and perhaps also the most important thing about the results of this week’s Spanish general election was something that did not happen. In defiance of some predictions, there was no populist uprising in Sunday’s poll, whether from the right, the left or the regions. Instead, the clear winner in a complex multi-party and regionally diverse contest characteristic of modern Spain was one of the two parties which have dominated the country since the return to democracy in the 1970s: the centre-left PSOE socialists of Pedro Sánchez.
The socialist victory was not absolute, but by recent standards it was clearcut. It will be keenly watched around Europe. It is a reminder that, in some parts of Europe, the social democratic centre-left retains the capacity, as it also currently does in countries as diverse as Finland and Portugal, to win elections by offering socially inclusive improvements to the status quo.

Bret Easton Ellis is part dinosaur, part sage. I’m intrigued | Suzanne Moore
If Patrick Bateman, the serial killer at the heart of American Psycho, were to venture on to Twitter, would all hell break loose? No. He would just be looking for celebity retweets like everyone else.
I saw Bret Easton Ellis talking on stage of his creation, who still stalks him, the other day. He was louche and likable, an ageing enfant terrible, a literary man. Well, that is the version I saw, but he is as unreliable a narrator of his own life as Bateman is. Authors’ talks are always a performance and Easton Ellis has been starring in his own horror movie for a long time.

I feel grief and relief that I’ve never had children. Other women must share this | Katherine Baldwin
We have a choice about motherhood but it’s not always clear-cut, and ambivalence can be a painful place
In the last month, there’s been a run of fertility-related news stories, from the pregnancy figures that confirmed the trend towards later motherhood, to the suggestion that IVF clinics are exploiting older women, to the huge emotional and financial cost of failed IVF. But among them, I don’t hear about experiences that chime with my own, or with those of some of the women I coach – the women who are or were ambivalent about having children.
Ambivalence, from the Latin, means to be pulled strongly in two directions. This aptly describes my relationship to motherhood. I spent my 20s and early 30s avoiding having a baby at all costs as I built my career as a foreign correspondent. Back in London and approaching 40, a combination of factors sparked baby angst. There was my ticking biological clock, burnout in my job and my father’s death, which exposed my aloneness and made me question why I’d prioritised work over family.

Here are some of the things that people are saying about mixed-race babies at the moment: websites have run stories about the “viral” mixed-race children of Instagram, who are trending because of their “gorgeous blonde hair, light eyes, and golden skin that looks like sand”. White teenagers – in conversations that I have both overheard and been privy to – say, “I really want to have kids with a black guy because mixed-race babies are so cute! I just love their curly hair, and oh my God, the ones with freckles.”
The Kardashians, who have been accused by some people of turning that particular fantasy into reality, are a never-ending source of related commentary. Kylie Jenner is currently causing people to “fall all over themselves with praise” because she learned how to do her mixed-race daughter’s hair.

Don't ditch the adverb, the emoji of writing | Gary Nunn
The adverb gets people fired up, and the chorus calling for a ban is getting too loud to ignore
Should we brazenly ditch the adverb? For those who spotted the nerdy linguistic pun in that question, my bias may be already abundantly clear.
But maybe I’m wrong. Plenty of writers offer lexical advice - both solicited and not. The adverb gets people weirdly fired up; many are less fond of it than me. I spent recent months devouring writing about writing as I complete the first draft of my first novel, so the recurring themes are fresh in my sun-kissed skull.

Radio host Mike Francesca questions character of Giants pick who was shot
- Corey Ballentine’s teammate was killed in Topeka shooting
- Francesca appears more concerned about Giants’ reputation
Prominent sports radio host Mike Francesca appears to have blamed New York Giants draft pick Corey Ballentine for a shooting in which he was injured and his college teammate Dwane Simmons was killed over the weekend.
Simmons’s family say police told them the two players were about to leave a party early on Sunday near their college, Washburn University, when a vehicle pulled up to them. They talked to people in the car before shots were fired and Simmons was killed. He was 23. Police in Topeka, Kansas, have not suggested Simmons or Ballentine were culpable for the incident.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has once again found himself at the centre of a storm after clashing with Nedum Onuoha during an MLS game on Sunday.

NBA playoff power rankings: Warriors still top as Celtics rise in the East
The first round of the NBA playoffs are over and the second round is already underway. The Rockets are dangerous despite a Game 1 loss while the 76ers have problems
It wasn’t the most exciting first round of the NBA playoffs. In fact, there were exactly zero upsets as the higher-seeded teams won every single series. There were a few dramatic moments (thank you very much Damian Lillard) and one seven-game series (Nuggets-Spurs) but all in all it just made most basketball fans thirsty for the far sweeter match-ups taking place in the Conference Semifinals. Taking account of the Game 1’s that have already been played, here’s our revamped NBA power rankings of the remaining teams.

Trump’s record on white nationalism under new scrutiny after synagogue shooting
Kellyanne Conway, the president’s counselor, sought to defend Trump’s record during CNN interview: ‘He does think it’s a threat’
The Trump administration faced fresh scrutiny on Sunday over the president’s fraught record on white nationalism in the wake of a suspected hate crime at a synagogue in California on Saturday, which left one woman dead and three injured.
Trump unequivocally condemned the shooting, telling a rally on Saturday evening in Wisconsin: “Our entire nation mourns the loss of life, prays for the wounded, and stands in solidarity with the Jewish community. We forcefully condemn the evil of anti-Semitism and hate, which must be defeated.”

Big tech must get its house in order or risk stronger regulation | Michael Boskin
Governments had to act on Facebook, Google and Amazon – but they could stifle innovation
Two years ago, it seemed clear that a combination of factors would lead to increased calls to regulate technology companies, especially the big tech giants Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google. When that happens, I argued at the time, regulatory policy would have to strike a sensible balance between mitigating the most harmful effects of technology and allowing tech companies to continue improving people’s lives.
Now that day has arrived and achieving such a balance will be difficult. Having benignly neglected these companies for years, democratic governments are now producing a dizzying array of policies to regulate them. The risk is that the flurry of policymaking will overcorrect and do more harm than good, not least by unintentionally stifling innovation and competition.
