Most of us feel sleepy in the afternoon. Why can’t work fit round that? | Andre Spicer

Even medieval monks complained of an afternoon lull. Now a third of Britons are sleep-deprived, work should be flexible

In the early afternoon, I often catch myself listlessly staring into the computer screen. I have things to do, but I can’t concentrate. I try writing the same sentence five times and delete it six. During one of these afternoon torpors, I came upon a word: acedia. It seemed to perfectly define my mid-afternoon weariness. I discovered this originally Greek word was widely used by medieval Christian monks to describe a sense of indolence, a mood of lethargy, a feeling of being completely unconcerned about their duties and purpose in the world. Christian mystics who lived in the Egyptian deserts during the 3rd century AD often complained about being haunted by the “noon-day demon”.

Britain is in the grip of an existential crisis that reaches far beyond Brexit | Aditya Chakrabortty

Nearly three years after the referendum, Westminster has still not come to terms with the grievances that drove the result

The person who is best qualified to hold up a mirror to British politics today is neither a minister nor an academic. He is not even British. No: he is, of course, Michel Barnier, the French-born servant of Brussels. In his 1,036 days as the EU’s chief negotiator, he has sat for numbing hours opposite Theresa May, haggled with David Davis and Dominic Raab and their junior ministers and faced down countless Whitehall officials. He is the outsider who knows our system inside out. So when he popped up right at the end of the BBC’s fly on the wall Storyville documentaries on the Brexit negotiations, I leaned in to listen.

Barnier doesn’t do florid, so his words leapt out … It wasn’t even Brexit at all. The UK is in a crisis as big as the country itself.

Trump needs to make peace with China and get a cut in interest rates | Larry Elliott

US president’s target has tended to be Beijing but his focus is likely to turn more to the Federal Reserve

Stock markets around the world are sending a message to Donald Trump: end your trade war with China or face the nightmare scenario of running for a second term in the White House with the economy in serious trouble.

The big falls seen on the world’s major bourses this week are the result of one thing: the growing fear of the impact of the standoff between Washington and Beijing on trade, industrial production and business confidence.

Overtime goal gives St Louis Blues their first-ever win in Stanley Cup finals

  • Carl Gunnarsson scores game-clinching goal for Blues
  • Victory over Boston Bruins levels series at 1-1

Carl Gunnarsson scored on a delayed penalty in overtime, Jordan Binnington made 21 saves and the St Louis Blues beat the Boston Bruins 3-2 on Wednesday night to tie the Stanley Cup Final at one game apiece.

Robert Bortuzzo and Vladimir Tarasenko also scored to help St Louis win a Cup finals game for the first time in 14 tries in franchise history. It was the first overtime in a Cup final since Game 2 of 2016. Charlie Coyle and Joakim Nordstrom scored for Boston and Tuukka Rask made 33 saves. The Bruins won 4-2 in Game 1 on Monday night and had won eight straight games. Gunnarsson also hit the post behind Rask with about two minutes left in regulation. In the final minute, Boston’s David Pastrnak had a chance off a faceoff, but Binnington turned it away.

Albert Almora in tears after striking child with foul ball in Cubs-Astros game

  • Outfielder’s line drive enters stands and hits girl
  • Cubs player consoled by teammates after accident

A young fan at Wednesday night’s game between the Cubs and Astros was struck by a foul ball hit by Albert Almora Jr, shaking up the Chicago center fielder.

Almora hit a fourth-inning line drive into the stands down the third base line, where it hit a young girl. He immediately put his hands on his head and took a couple of steps toward the stands. He then fell to his knees near the plate and was consoled by teammate Jason Heyward and manager Joe Maddon. It took several minutes for Almora, who appeared to be crying, to compose himself and continue the at-bat, and players from both teams also appeared shaken up by the scene.

Kawhi Leonard: the man standing between the Warriors and yet another NBA title

Golden State are predicted to win a fourth NBA title in five seasons. But the Toronto Raptors have a player capable of making a difference everywhere on court

The Toronto Raptors didn’t quite come from nowhere to make the NBA finals but they hardly entered the playoffs as the favorites to come out of the East. Past demons loomed largely. So did the Sixers, Celtics and Bucks. But this Toronto team, built differently to their disappointing predecessors of the last half-decade, advanced to the franchise’s first NBA finals, thanks to the acquisition of a true paradigm-shifter: Kawhi Leonard. He’s also perhaps the only player on earth with a realistic chance of stopping the Golden State Warriors juggernaut from winning a fourth NBA title in five seasons.

Leonard is the definition of a franchise player. He elevates a good team into a championship contender. Along with veteran addition Marc Gasol and youngster Pascal Siakam, Leonard helped shatter the mental block of previous Raptors teams in the postseason, as Toronto came back from 0-2 down to win four straight games against Milwaukee and the likely league MVP, Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Robert Mueller breaks silence to insist he did not exonerate Trump

  • Mueller’s statement seen by many as signal to Congress to act
  • Special counsel ‘not confident’ Trump did not commit a crime

Robert Mueller, the special counsel, on Wednesday reignited demands for Donald Trump’s impeachment by breaking his two-year silence to deny that the US president is innocent of a crime.

In a sudden and dramatic turn, Mueller, whose report on Russian election interference and Trump campaign links to Moscow was published last month, delivered a sombre nine-minute statement that many construed as a signal to Congress to act on his finding that Trump sought to obstruct justice.

Financial markets around the world have sold off sharply after Beijing signalled a readiness to strike back at Washington in their escalating trade war by restricting exports of rare-earth elements.

Bernanke, Paulson and Geithner: revisiting the 2008 financial crisis | Howard Davies

Three of the key players co-author a book about lessons of the past and make proposals for the future

Journalists, the adage goes, write the first rough draft of history. It’s a grand claim but perhaps the best of them achieve something close to that. In the case of the great financial crisis of 2008, Andrew Ross Sorkin of the New York Times did so in his book Too Big to Fail, which remains a useful description of how it felt on Wall Street when the markets began to collapse. Sorkin had good access to the key people involved.

The second draft of history is often written by the key people themselves. After the second world war, Winston Churchill confidently asserted that history would treat him kindly because “I propose to write that history”. When the financial crisis erupted, the same thought may have crossed the minds of Hank Paulson, Ben Bernanke and Tim Geithner, who were US Treasury secretary, chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank and president of the New York Fed, respectively. All three published lengthy memoirs explaining why they did and didn’t, do what they did and didn’t do – inevitably, with a degree of self-justification in each case.

[Discussion] Looking for albums that are one cohesive piece?

I find I tend to really dig albums that can be viewed as one whole piece of art, as opposed to a bunch of unrelated singles mashed together, but I've definitely hit a wall trying to find them. Some examples are things like Dark Side of the Moon, Tommy, and Thick as a Brick. Honestly, I would even consider The Lumineer's self titled album to be one as well! If anyone has any suggestions, please please drop em below!

AITA - I moved for my husband's job, my kids now hate me

Bit long, stick with me. Throwaway because I'm active on a mom board, and haven't discussed this there.

My ex and I split 5 years ago now. We had a daughter who is 16, a son who is 13 and a daughter who is 5. He's always been a good dad, and we split 50/50 custody, essentially the kids one week my house/one week his house. After my divorce, I reconnected with a high school boyfriend and fell head over heels in love again. He's in the military but hadn't had to move in years. We married 2 years ago.

A year ago, he got orders to move to Texas from where we all were in California. My older two kids were not happy at all, and didn't want to move, while the baby didn't really express a preference. I approached my ex and told him the situation. I said I know the situation sucks, but we'd foot the bill to him for every trip to him on holidays, breaks, summers, etc. He blew his top and said absolutely not, I wouldn't "take his kids away" and said he'd see me in court.

The judge ended up ruling in his favor, and I was awarded summers and every other holiday. I was absolutely devastated. I moved, and I've barely seen the kids since. They came at Christmas for a week, and it was tense the whole time. The older kids, especially my daughter, are short with me on FaceTime, while the baby gets distracted and can't chat much. My daughter has said I chose a man over her, and that she wants nothing to do with me, while my son won't talk about it but I can tell he's angry.

I've asked my ex to talk to them about it and he basically said I chose to leave, it's my fault and he's not getting involved in "our issues". So, let me have it Reddit, AITA?

Smithsonian's first black leader: 'There are still doors people can't get in'

Lonnie Bunch, named the 14th secretary of the Washington DC institution, aims to define Amerincanness through diverse stories

The corridor of power at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington is lined with framed portraits of its past leaders – a succession of white men of a certain age. But change is coming to the biggest museum, education and research complex in the world.

On Tuesday, the Smithsonian named Lonnie Bunch as its 14th secretary – and the first African American to hold the position in its 173-year history.

'I wash all my food like crazy': researchers voice concern about nanoparticles

US foods are packed with nanoparticles, even as long-term evidence of their safety is missing. How did we get here, and what should we do?

France is clamping down on a common food additive that has been shown to be carcinogenic in animal studies. The ban of titanium dioxide, announced by the French government last month, follows a review that could not rule out human cancer risks.

The ban is just the latest chapter in a long-running debate on the safety of widespread food additives known as nanoparticles, which are largely unregulated in the US. This suite of ingredients, engineered to almost atomic scale, might have unintended effects on cells and organs, particularly the digestive tract. There are also indications that nanoparticles might get into the bloodstream and accumulate elsewhere in the body. They have been linked to inflammation, liver and kidney damage and even heart and brain damage.

Let’s hope the gender-flipped US version of Peep Show isn’t a bad joke | Arwa Mahdawi

Female losers deserve to be represented but US TV doesn’t have a good track record when it comes to adapting much-loved British comedies

I regret to inform you that the Americans are at it again. After rebooting and ruining a slew of beloved British TV shows (I am still traumatised by the way they mangled Skins and The Inbetweeners), they have decided to remake Peep Show. Sam Bain, co-creator of the original Bafta-wining sitcom, broke the news in a recent article he wrote for the Guardian, revealing that the new version will be developed by Portlandia writer Karey Dornetto for the FX network.

This, by the way, isn’t the first attempt at adapting Peep Show for a stateside audience – it’s the fourth. Fox made a (highly embarrassing) pilot in 2005; Spike TV gave it a shot in 2008; Starz tried in 2016. Somehow, the British nihilism always seems to get lost in translation and the remake falls apart. To be fair, however, there is something very different about this latest effort: the leads will be women. “I can’t wait to find out what sick and twisted bullshit goes on inside the minds of a pair of female losers,” Bain enthused in his piece, which was about the importance of diversity in comedy.

On Sunday the results began to emerge, albeit in the form of exit polls, and on Monday politicians and pundits came out to try to shape the interpretation of those exit polls.

Baseball team sorry for video equating Ocasio-Cortez with 'enemies of freedom'

  • Fresno Grizzlies apologize for ‘misleading’ Memorial Day video
  • Montage equated Ocasio-Cortez with Kim Jong-un, Fidel Castro
  • Lawmaker says messages like video contribute to death threats

A minor-league affiliate of the Washington Nationals has apologized to US congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for the “misleading and offensive editing” of a Memorial Day tribute video shown in the stadium that appeared to equate the New York lawmaker with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and former Cuban president Fidel Castro.

The Fresno Grizzlies, the Nationals’ Triple-A team, said the montage of patriotic imagery set to excerpts from president Ronald Reagan’s first inauguration address was intended as a “moving tribute” to the US armed forces. But during a sequence near the end of the video, as Reagan references “enemies of freedom” and “potential adversaries”, an image of Ocasio-Cortez was displayed in between photos of the dictators and pictures of protesters holding Antifa signs.

Oakland Raiders spring shock by signing troubled guard Richie Incognito

  • 35-year-old was suspended over bullying former teammate
  • Incognito also accused of threatening funeral home workers

The Oakland Raiders agreed to a one-year deal with troubled guard Richie Incognito on Tuesday. Incognito’s agent, Ken Sarnoff, tweeted confirmation of the deal, congratulating his client for his return to the NFL after sitting out last season in retirement.

The 35-year-old Incognito has played 11 years in the NFL, making the Pro Bowl four times, and immediately becomes the leading contender to start at left guard in Oakland. But he has also been suspended for bullying, allegedly made racist slurs to an opponent during a playoff game in January 2018 and he has had two run-ins with police since he retired following the 2017 season. Incognito pleaded guilty last month to disorderly conduct in Scottsdale, Arizona, after being accused of threatening employees at a funeral home where his father’s body was being held. He could face suspension from the NFL over those last three incidents.

How to build a spelling bee champion

As a tutor, what makes the National Spelling Bee so fulfilling is that it represents the culmination of dozens of hours of study spent practicing these skills with my students

The Scripps National Spelling Bee is an object of curiosity and bemusement. Many of the millions who will tune in to ESPN’s blanket coverage of this week’s competition outside Washington DC marvel at the pre-teen competitors’ sangfroid but may find themselves wondering: Isn’t spelling just a robotic exercise in learning by rote? Who would waste their time memorizing words nobody ever uses? And what’s the point in the age of spell-check?

This skepticism about spelling’s relevance is widespread. When I decided to compete in the Bee in 2007, my father asked why I didn’t spend my time on something more practical, like science fairs or the National Geography Bee. It’s true that some spellers simply drill long lists of random words, and others set themselves the arduous task of working through the dictionary page by page. If that were all that spelling was, then critics of the Bee – including advocates of orthographical reform who picket it annually – would have a point. As a tutor for about 20 competitors in this year’s bee, the refrains are familiar.
