Barack Obama and George W Bush lead McCain tributes – video
Former US presidents George W Bush and Barack Obama gave eulogies for the late senator John McCain at a memorial service at Washington National Cathedral on Saturday.
Without mentioning his name Obama delivered a broadside at the current US president Donald Trump when he decried "insult and phony controversies" in the politics and public life. Delivering his eulogy in front of McCain's flag-draped coffin, Obama said: "So much of our politics, our public life, our public discourse can seem small and mean and petty, trafficking in bombast and insult and phony controversies and manufactured outrage."
The day was full of coded repudiations of Trump's nationalism and demagoguery. George W Bush said McCain "loved freedom with the passion of a man who knew its absence and, perhaps above all, detested the abuse of power and could not abide bigots and swaggering despots".
