That time my nephew was "human trafficked"
So my sister calls me in the middle of the night. Well, it was like 11:30pm but I was sleeping so I woke up to this frantic call. We'll call my nephew "Sam"
"Hello?"
"OMG, Sam was just human trafficked!!!!"
I jumped out of bed in a panic. My husband woke up. I'm freaking. I ask what happened.
She tells me he's fine now, safe at home. Then she said he was "almost" human trafficked. Now that I could breathe easier, I asked her for the details.
My 17yr old nephew works at a fast food place in a shopping center. He was in the parking lot after his shift and a woman walked up to him, said he looked like a good worker, and would he like a job? He says no thanks, he has a job. She says he can make a lot of money and work from home. She gives him a basic business card with just her name and number and some line about making lots of money. He said she seemed nice, maybe overly nice, and insisted that he call her back for the job.
Now, you all know where this is going. My sister did not.
My nephew went home and mentioned the weird lady to his mom. My sister then immediately thought she was a human trafficker trying to lure my nephew away. To be fair, we live in Texas and this is a huge hotspot for trafficking, which is horrifying.
She called the cops and reported it and they came out and took his statement and looked into it. It turns out this woman, who was easily searchable on Facebook with her name and number from the business card, was just shilling MLM crap and not stealing teenagers. But can you imagine what she looked like when the cops showed up at her house?
Edit: The woman didn't approach my nephew that late at night. It was around 8pm. My sister just called me after picking him up from work and then calling the cops and filing the report, which is why it was late.
Also - as much as I'm laughing at her for freaking out, human trafficking can totally happen that way. Most people who get trafficked actually willingly go with the person because they think they can trust them. Do your research! Never trust strange people in parking lots! And definitely, never, ever, trust people selling MLM crap.
Edit 2: holy crap I was just sharing a funny story with my favorite subreddit and it somehow made it to /r/all and people are taking this way too seriously.
